Diamondbacks Should Not Be Players in Big Ticket Free Agency

By Scott Allen

Albert Pujols, I would love to see him in an Arizona Diamondbacks uniform.  Prince Fielder?  You bet, even after all the whining the Dbacks fans did about him this season, which to me, bordered on ridiculous.  Let’s get this straight though, the Dbacks may be in the market for a big bat in the off-season, however they will not be adding Pujols or Fielder for many reasons.

The first reason is plain and simple, the Dbacks already have their future first baseman in Paul Goldschmidt.  I don’t think there is any doubt he is going to be the man for awhile.  Goldschmidt hit eight home runs and 26 RBI in his two months with the team.  That projects out to roughly 25 home runs and 80 RBI if you consider the time he actually got out on the field in those two months.  He probably puts bigger numbers up though in his second season, that being a full season in the majors.

Secondly, the Dbacks aren’t going to pay the money.  Simply put, they will be too expensive.  Even if the Dbacks had the money, I doubt they would spend it.  You want guys like Pujols and Fielder, not necessarily those players, to be a Dback?  Start going to the games.  The team can’t make the money to get the players you want unless you are willing to pony up the money to attend the games.  Can’t even think about it.

The Dbacks will probably add a bat or two, but nothing drastic.  Should be an interesting off-season.
