Arizona Diamondbacks Make First Moves of Off-Season

By Scott Allen

So it begins.  The cleansing of 2011 and the beginning of 2012 is here.  The World Series may still be going on, but the Arizona Diamondbacks are in preparation mode for 2012.  The Dbacks made several roster moves on Friday.  Not that any of the moves were all that surprising but it shows the Dbacks are wasting no time in getting ready to get the rodeo rolling again.

The Dbacks sent Sean Burroughs, Alberto Castillo, and Robby Hammock down to AAA Reno.  The Dbacks added Dave Winfree to the 40-man roster.

The Dbacks moving Hammock really came as no surprise.  He did very little after his September call up and the Dbacks are pretty much set for a long while at catcher, although they may or may not be in the market for a backup.

Burroughs was left on the postseason roster, however, he never could do enough to impress consistently.  Little power and little production left Burroughs packing his bags for Reno.  I hope he continues to work at it though.  I think he still has something to give to the game.  Whether that will be with Arizona or not remains to be seen.

Castillo got injured and was a non-factor down the stretch as well.  He had a chance to be a productive member of the bullpen but it never came to complete fruition.  I’m not sure though we’ve seen the last of him in a Dbacks uniform.

As for Winfree, he had nine home runs and 37 RBI for AAA Reno in 2011.  We’ll see if he competes for a spot in spring training or not.
