Josh Collmenter, Trevor Bauer get the Starts in Split-Squad Opener

By Unknown author

The day is finally here.  Time to knock the dust off the D-Backs jersey and get ready for the honest to goodness baseball…well, sort of.

The Arizona Diamondbacks open their Spring Schedule today with a split-squad session.  One squad will face the Rockies as Salt River Field at 1:10 PM awhile the other will travel to Scottsdale Stadium to take on the Giants at 1:05PM.  In an interesting scenario, top-prospect Trevor Bauer

will face the Rockies while fifth starter Josh Collmenter will go against the Giants.  This will give fans the opportunity to compare the two in realtime–of course only if you have MLB.TV or can clone yourself to be in two stadiums at once–as the fates of the two starters may be intertwined before too long.

After a fine rookie season, Collmenter earned a spot in the starting rotation.  However, if he were to slip up at all Bauer would be one of the top candidates to replace him.  The fireballing Bauer is drawing rave reviews and will likely be in Arizona sooner, rather than later–and with Tyler Skaggs also close to the majors–the D-Backs rotation is on the verge of getting extremely crowded.  It’s highly likely that some of the D-Backs young arms could be dealt as other holes in the roster begin to expose themselves later this season.

Note: Skaggs was scheduled to start against the Rockies but he was scratched due to left shoulder soreness.  He’s expected to be fine.
