BayBears give fans something to cheer about

By Christian Moffett

Hank Aaron Stadium has become the hot hangout in Mobile. On Tuesday, the D’Backs Double-A affiliate Mobile BayBears unveiled their Southern League championship trophy for the 2011 season. The 2011 team in Mobile consisted of several current Diamondbacks such as Paul Goldschmidt and Trevor Bauer. The 2011 Southern League championship marked the third in franchise history for Mobile but that number was soon to become four when the team won the championship last year as well. A series win against the Jackson Generals topped off a successful season for Mobile in 2012. Their somewhat glossy 75-73 record proved to not be an issue because ultimately, the BayBears walked away with the trophy.

Manager Turner Ward, who also managed the Southern League All Stars in 2012 enters his third year with Mobile in search of his third title. (not too shabby, huh?) Although the 2012 hardware has not been unveiled, it gives an anxious and largely growing fan base in southern Alabama something to look forward to this off-season. Mobile looks to defend their back-to-back titles starting in April as the host the Blue Wahoos from Pensacola.
