Game 161 Preview: Nationals VS. Diamondbacks

To secure a .500 season, the Arizona Diamondbacks (80-80) must win at least one of their final two games. After losing the opening game of their three game series against the Washington Nationals (85-75) on Friday night, the two teams will face off again on Saturday night.

Brandon McCarthy (5-10, 4.64 ERA) will take the mound. The 30-year-old is coming off a loss to the San Diego Padres. In six innings pitched, he allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out two in the D-Backs’ 4-1 loss to the Pads’.

Dan Haren (9-14, 4.87) will be on the hill for Washington, who suffered a 4-2 loss against the Miami Marlins in his last outing. He allowed three runs on eight hits during his six innings on the mound, striking out five in the process.

In 2008, Haren won 20 games as a member of the Diamondbacks. He tied that feat in 2011 while the Los Angeles Angels.

MVP candidate Paul Goldschmidt will attempt to extend his hitting streak to 18 games. The 26-year-old first baseman is tied for National League lead with 36 home runs and leads the NL with 124 RBIs.

Just Denard Span (3-for-8) and Scott Hairston (0-for-2) are the only two hitters on the Nationals who have previously faced McCarthy.
