The Arizona Diamondbacks have claimed Alex Sanabia off waivers from the Miami Marlins. The 25-year-old hurler posted a 3-7 record this past season, with an ERA of 4.88.
Sanabia is infamous for his spitball thrown back in May, something he claimed he did not realize was illegal.
"“I didn’t know. I was in my zone and just grooving… I don’t know what they expect from spitting on it,” Sanabia said. “My intention wasn’t to be like `Let’s get more movement.’ My intention was I need more grip.”"
He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 27 due to right groin discomfort, but never returned to the active roster. On July 23, he was transferred to the 60-day DL.
Entering his fourth year in the big leagues, Sanabia will most likely begin the season in Class AAA Reno. After getting drafted by the Marlins in the 32nd round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, Sanabia is 8-10 with a 4.15 ERA, striking out 86 while walking 44 in the process.
