Yasmany Tomas Struggling at Third Base

When Yasmany Tomas was signed by the Diamondbacks over the winter, most scouts figured he would fit into the outfield picture.

The Diamondbacks had a different idea. Manager Chip Hale and the front office wanted Tomas to be the third basemen. He played that position in Cuba, but not as much as the outfield.

He started working on the position early at Salt River Fields, and his early work made many optimistic about the chances of him succeeding at the position.

So far during spring games, he has drawn mixed reviews, and at times has shown a lack of focus. He needs to be better at third, but everybody needs to keep in mind that he is trying to adjust to playing baseball in the Major Leagues.

Meanwhile Jake Lamb has looked gold glove caliber at third in an effort to make the roster. If Lamb wins the 3B job, than Tomas would play in the OF.

No matter where Tomas plays, he will be pushing another really good player out of the mix. If he plays in the OF, than David Peralta or Ender Inciarte will loose playing time, and if it’s at third he will push out Lamb.

The competition is going to be fierce down the stretch.
