Arizona Diamondbacks News: Gerald Laird to the D.L, A.J. Schugel Called Up

The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed veteran catcher Gerald Laird on the 15-day D.L. with lower back spasms and recalled reliever A.J. Schugel from Triple-A-Reno.

Laird was originally supposed to catch Archie Bradley‘s major-league debut last night, but he was scratched from the lineup, and Tuffy Gosewisch started in place of him.

My Thoughts:

The Diamondbacks already had three catchers on the roster, so this move doesn’t really affect the team.

Jordan Pacheco will most likely be the backup to Gosewisch while Laird is on the D.L.

With Laird’s injury some fans will be calling for Peter O’Brien to get his chance in the majors especially after the way he has started his minor league season.

O’Brien will get his chance soon enough especially if he continues to take in the minor leagues.

The Diamondbacks bullpen is gassed and overworked. Other than Bradley last night, no Diamondbacks starter has gone five innings.

This team desperately needs reinforcements for the bullpen and that is why Schugel was called up.

He had a really good spring and the team needs fresh arms.
