Pirates @ Dbacks Preview: Helping the Opposition

When your offense isn’t producing runs like Arizona has in the last two games, you only help your cause to the opposition. Pittsburgh came in with one of the lowest ERA’s for starting pitchers. It has dropped to 2.73 in due part to back-to-back one run games. Arizona struggled with Gerrit Cole. They didn’t find an answer with A.J. Burnett. Now Francisco Liriano looks to continue that trend.

The Diamondbacks have not helped their cause with supporting their starters. They have had six straight quality starts, yet in four of those games they have only offered a run for their performance. The hits are there, but leaving men on base time after time has become contagious.

Things to note:

Liriano has also suffered what the D-Backs have done to their pitchers. In his three starts, the Pittsburgh offense has only scored four runs.

Starling Marte’s go ahead RBI single in the 9th continued his dominance against Diamondback pitching, earning at least a hit in all 15 contests against Arizona.

Jeremy Hellickson has never faced Pittsburgh.

A Pittsburgh win would give them their first series sweep of the year and the first against Arizona since 2010.
