Dbacks-Padres Preview: Upton Puts Hurt Against Former Team

You would think that former teammates would mentally be more ready to take on his former city. Justin Upton seems as if he has brought the pain to the team that started his career. His extra inning homerun in the 12th was the second time that Upton put the Diamondbacks away, this time in Arizona in a 6-4 victory.

Upton, who was called up in 2007 by the Diamondbacks, was one of the fan favorites during his time in Sedona Red. The right field stands and his “Uptown” catch phrase was very catchy. Then a major slump n 2012 had the team question how serious he was taking himself a year after the team made the playoffs. He was then traded to Atlanta the next season and was at it again, now averaging close to 30 home runs a season. San Diego then got a gift of their own and became a part of their revamped roster.

Upton seems to be content as the Diamondbacks have been trying to figure out their streakiness on offense. As the team struggles to put up runs consistently, now they have to worry about their pitching as the doubleheader against Colorado shook up their rotation. Josh Collmenter was to start today, but instead Danier Hudson will get the nod. It is his first start since 2012, and with how the bullpen had a lot of work last night, this could turn out to be a game where it becomes survival mode.

Things to note:

Andrew Cashner, San Diego’s starter, has only one run in support over the last 20 innings.

San Diego has also committed 9 of their 23 errors while he is on the mound.

Paul Goldschmidt is 5 for 11 against Cashner

Daniel Dorn was sent back to AAA-Reno, making room for another pitcher for today’s game.
