If Reed was to be removed from the closer’s position tomorrow, Ziegler would be everyone’s best bet to take over on a temporary basis. Of anyone on the Arizona roster not named Addison, Ziegler has had the most closing experience. In his three seasons in Oakland, Ziegler collected a total of 19 saves.
Once in the desert, Ziegler collected a couple of seasons in which he held a sub 2.50 ERA. In 2013, Ziegler appeared in a career high 78 games and collected a career high 13 saves. This season he’s pitched 13 ⅓ innings and has a 1.35 ERA. If the Dbacks need a placeholder until they find a long term solution, Ziegler is the ideal choice.
