In sports, championships matter. It may be the only reason that Schilling got the call over Brandon Webb. Webb, a lifetime Diamondback, was arguably the 2nd best pitcher in Arizona history. Webb collected nearly 30 more wins than Schilling and over 500 more innings. However, 2001 will linger in the minds of Dbacks fans for years and years to come.
Schilling was the 2001 World Series MVP and it was truly deserved. Schilling started that fateful Game 7 of the 2001 World Series and held the Yankees in check for more than 7 innings. In that postseason, Schilling was 4-0 with a 1.11 ERA, while striking out 56 hitters in 48.1 innings. Yes, his service time in Arizona lasted less than 4 years, but at the grandest stage of them all, Curt Schilling proved to be one of the greatest Diamondbacks ever.
