There has been virtually no talk of the Arizona Diamondbacks signing the #1 overall pick, Dansby Swanson, to a contract. The deadline to sign the shortstop is this Friday at 2 PM MST. If the D’backs and Swanson do not agree to a deal, then he will probably go back to Vanderbilt for his senior season. The window seems to be closing. However, if you listen to the Arizona front office there is no need to panic.

More from Diamondbacks Draft

Chief Baseball Officer Tony LaRussa indicated on his weekly 98.7 Arizona Sports spot (which you can listen to here) with Doug and Wolf and that he was confident Swanson would be in the fold by the deadline. “I think the situation will work out and it’s part of everything positive that’s happened in our organization”, LaRussa said. Coincidentally, he was getting ready to fly from Cincinnati to Atlanta, Swanson’s hometown. Also from management, De Jon Watson, Senior VP of Baseball Operations had this to say to azcentral’s Zach Buchanan:

"I can’t tell you what he’s going to do or what his advisers will tell him to do. We’re having a really good dialogue and communication has been very, very clear on both sides."

Given the fact the D’backs already traded away last year’s first round pick, Touki Toussaint do you believe Arizona will sign Swanson by Friday? If they don’t, that will send a clear message this organization does not value the draft as much as other franchises.
