The winds of trade are beginning to swirl. According to Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pittsburgh Pirates have taken an interest in Arizona Diamondbacks’ infielder Cliff Pennington. Pittsburgh could use some help after losing Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer to injury earlier this month. While not starting-caliber, Pennington would offer some depth for a Pirates’ team with World Series aspirations.

The 31-year old Pennington is hitting .245 with a .322 on-base percentage in 124 plate appearances this season. Primarily a shortstop, he has also seen time at second, third and even left field in 2015. Pennington is a free agent at the end of the year and with the D’backs having a surplus of middle infield players, including #1 pick Dansby Swanson, the chances of him staying in Arizona beyond 2015 are remote.

The D’backs’ switch-hitting veteran wouldn’t cost as much as someone like Ben Zobrist whom the Pirates are also interested in. He would make a decent second or third prize for whomever would lose out on Zobrist. He is not an every day guy but someone who can fill multiple spots and get an occasional big hit.
