Arizona Diamondbacks Announce July Minor League Awards


The Arizona Diamondbacks have announced their Minor League Awards for the month of July. Isan Diaz, a shortstop for the Missoula Osprey was named the Player of the Month and Carlos Hernandez, a right-hander for the Hillsboro Hops, was named the Pitcher of the Month. Congratulations to both men for jobs well done.

Diaz, age 19, was selected by the D’backs with the 70th overall pick the 2014 Draft from Springfield High School in Springfield, MA. In July, he batted .380 with an on-base percentage of .442. Diaz also hit four home runs with 20 RBI’s. He ranks in the top five of several offensive categories for the Pioneer League including third in batting average (.357), third in hits with 55 and fifth in runs scored with 30. Diaz capped a terrific month by being named as the starting shortstop in the league’s All-Star Game whcih will be played tonight at 7:05 PM MST.

Hernandez, age 21, was signed as a free agent at 18 from the Dominican Republic. He is part of a loaded starting rotation for the the Northwest League Hops that includes left-hander Cody Reed, However, it is Hernandez that has the most glistening stats. He was 3-0 with a 0.92 ERA in six starts. In 39 innings he allowed only 19 hits and ten walks while striking out 46. Opposing batters hit only .148 off him for the month. For the season, Hernandez is 3-1 with a 1.55 ERA in nine starts. He has struck out 64 batters in only 53 innings while surrendering 33 hits and 14 walks.
