After dropping 2 of 3 to the Pirates, the Arizona Diamondbacks are set to start a 4 game series with the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park to conclude the 10 game road trip.

The Diamondbacks come into this game 58-61 and in a tie for 3rd in the N.L. West with the San Diego Padres. The D-backs are currently 2-4 on the trip, and look to improve on that mark by at least earning a split with the Reds.

The Reds are 51-67, currently occupying the 4th spot in the N.L. Central. The three teams ahead of them, the Cardinals, Pirates, and Cubs are all destined for the playoffs. The Reds come into tonight’s game having lost 5 in a row.

Cincinnati will feature a lot of young players in this series particularly on the mound. Homer Bailey is on the D.L., Johnny Cueto was traded to the Royals at the trade deadline, and Mike Leake was dealt to the Giants at the deadline.

This series features a matchup of two of the best first basemen in the National League: Joey Votto of the Reds, and Paul Goldschmidt of the Diamondbacks.

Goldy currently leads the N.L. in batting average (.333) and leads the majors in plate appearances (524), and RBI’s (89). Goldschmidt has 22 go ahead hits this season and his longest on base streak this season is 27.

Votto is tied with Goldy for the N.L. lead in home runs with 22, and leads the N.L. with 93 walks this season. Votto is a career .348 hitter with 16 RBI’s against the D-backs.

The 2 teams met earlier this month August 7th-9th taking 2 of 3 at Chase Field.

Without further ado, here is a breakdown of the pitching matchups we will see in this series!
