Nick Ahmed made one of the better defensive plays of the season on Tuesday night. In the seventh inning, his diving stop of a ground ball off the bat of Alex Guerrero and getting a force out at second base prevented a big inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks turned a close game with the Los Angeles Dodgers into a rout. Unfortunately for Ahmed, he couldn’t stick around long enough to enjoy his work as he immediately left the game.

to David Adler at mlb.com, Ahmed will miss a couple of more games because of an aggravated back. X-rays were taken after the game and fortunately they came back negative. In the aftermath, it seemed a lot worse. Ahmed was seen in the clubhouse on crutches and became concerned when he felt some tingling and numbness in his leg. On Wednesday, the D-backs’ shortstop indicated there was still some pain but that he felt much better.
The next step for Ahmed is to run and swing a bat so he can gauge when a return to action will take place. He is not scheduled for an MRI and the tingling he felt is not as prevalent. With him out, Chris Owings played shortstop on Wednesday with Brandon Drury manning second. Expect that to be the positioning until Ahmed returns.
