Arizona Diamondbacks Daily Dose: No Aces?

The Arizona Diamondbacks first priority is addressing the starting rotation. The team will have money to spend and have already been linked to free agent right-hander Mike Leake. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they will be in the market for a big-time ace such as David Price and Zack Greinke according to Zach Buchanan at azcentral. See this quote from D-backs’ President Derrick Hall:

"If you want to go after one of the top-tier guys, it’s probably going to limit anything else we can do in the offseason."

You can argue that the only thing separating the D-backs from the playoffs is a top-flight starting pitcher. However, as Buchanan notes, signing one of those big names will require at least a $150 million dollar commitment. Even though the resources from the new television deal kick in starting in 2016, it is not as though the Snakes have unlimited resources. The organization is understandably leery in tying so much money up in one player considering this team has such a young core. The dollars need to be there for guys like A.J. Pollock and Patrick Corbin. So while a Price or a Greinke would indeed excite the fan base, it might not be the best idea as far keeping a sustainable, winning franchise beyond the expiration of a humungous contract.
