The Starting Pitcher
It is basically choosing between two aces. But as good as Robbie Ray has been, I think four important factors point towards starting Zack Greinke in this game.
Postseason experience: Greinke has made nine career postseason starts and owns a 3.55 ERA. Ray has never pitched in a playoff game.
Chase Field: Assuming the game is at home, arguably no starter in the majors has pitched better at home this season then Zack Greinke. Greinke is 13-1 with a 2.33 ERA compared to Ray’s 6-4 mark with a 4.37 ERA.
Dodger Dominance: If the Diamondbacks get past the wild card game and the Dodgers hang onto the best record in the National League, Arizona would begin the division series at Dodger Stadium. Ray arguably has been the best road starter in baseball. He is 8-1 with a 1.33 ERA away from Chase Field and is 1-0 with a 0.92 ERA in three starts at Dodger Stadium this season.
Facing Colorado: The D-backs most likely opponent for the wild card game still is the Rockies. Greinke is 2-1 with a 3.41 ERA in five starts against Colorado this season. Ray is 0-2 with a 4.97 ERA in two starts.
