Zack Greinke vs Ian Kennedy
Zack Greinke’s last start was scratched to get him on schedule for the Wild Card start. That puts him up against the Royals’ Ian Kennedy. Kennedy, a former Diamondback, couldn’t look more opposite of Greinke.
Kennedy with his 5.50 ERA and 124 strikeouts is still looking for his fifth win of the season, but has taken 13 losses. On the other hand, Greinke has a 3.18 ERA and 211 strikeouts and will be looking for his 18th win of the season.
Jeff Mathis is scheduled to make his first start on Friday, catching for Greinke for the first time since fracturing a bone in his hand in August. Mathis was Greinke’s designated catcher for his first 25 starts and bringing that chemistry back together could spell disaster for the Diamondbacks’ Wild Card opponent.
For the offense, it is no surprise that J.D. Martinez, in 12 at-bats, is batting .273 against Kennedy.
Martinez is looking to continue one of the hottest September campaigns in baseball. With 16 home runs in the month of September, Martinez tied an NL record joining Ralph Kiner in 1949. He has hit 6 HR and picked up 15 RBI in his last ten games, but will likely rest on Sunday.
