Arizona Diamondbacks: 14 players eligible for salary arbitration in 2018

Obvious Non-Tenders
Chris Herrmann: Sure, he had a good catchers ERA. But, the D-backs have Jeff Mathis and Chris Iannetta (if he returns) that are arguably better defensively. Even if he only costs $1.4 million, any major league player, even if they are a catcher, has to hit better than .181 in 106 games to stick around. The “Herrminator” is still one of the best nicknames though.
T.J. McFarland: McFarland ranked first among all NL relievers in ground ball percentage, but a 5.93 ERA is not going to cut it.
Bottom Line
If the D-backs choose to keep all 14 players, it would cost $52 million. If the D-backs want to resign J.D., while also insuring the present and future core of this team, not everybody can stay.
At first glance, I would let Owings and Miller become free agents, along with Herrmann and McFarland. That would still leave a hefty sum of $40.9 million owed to 10 players.
That means Hazen would have plenty of wheeling and dealing to do.
