10/21 D-Backs Arizona Fall League Report

It is hard to believe that we are about to enter our third week of play in the Arizona Fall League. The Salt River Rafters, the team that features seven prospects of the Arizona Diamondbacks, is now 4-6, 3 1/2 games behind the first place Mesa Solar Sox. Here is a look at how the D-backs’ players are faring as the AFL season continues to roll on. Note: left-handed pitcher Andrew Chafin was replaced by fellow lefty Henry Garcia who has not appeard in a game yet. No reason as of yet has been given in regards to the switch.

Nick Ahmed – The shortstop still is stuggling to make contact consistently (.222 batting average in 18 at-bats) yet is finding his way on base (.364 on-base percentage). His last appearance came on October 19th, when he came into the game as a pinch-runner in the 9th inning, scored a run and later in the inning added a base hit as Salt River scored seven times in the frame to beat Mesa 8-2.

Jake Barrett – Right-handed reliever Barrett picked up the win in that game against Mesa by tossing a scoreless eighth inning, allowing a walk. In his prior outing, Barrett encountered some issues in his inning of work, allowing one run on one hit and walking two. Through three appearances, he is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA with three innings pitched, two hits allowed, three walks and four strikeouts.

Mike Freeman – Like Ahmed, Freeman’s batting average is subpar (.231 in 13 at-bats) yet is effective getting on base (.375 on-base average). The second baseman has hit in three of the four games he has appeared in. Freeman also last played in the 10/19 game and contributed a hit and an RBI in that big 9th inning.

Jake Lamb – Third baseman Lamb has seen the most time out of the D’backs position players with a total of 25 at-bats. His slash line of .240/.387/.320 is nothing to write home about but his 11 strikeouts translates into about a 44% rate. However, the only game Lamb has gone hitless was the first one; his hitting streak is now at six.

Bo Schultz – The righty has not pitched since 10/15 when he went five innings against the Surprise Saguaros allowing two unearned runs. In two games covering 8 1/3 innings, Schultz has given up four runs (only two earned), on seven hits, walking three and striking out ten. He would be in line to appear in today’s game against the Peoria Javelinas.

Matt Stites – His final ERA will still be ugly but Stites has pitched much better since his initial brutal outing. In his last three games covering three innings, he has allowed one earned run on two hits, walking three and striking out two. Stites last appeared on 10/18 tossing a scoreless eighth inning against Peoria.
