Every minor leaguer wants this day to come. Today, the Arizona Diamondbacks made Nick Evans dream come true. The Snakes have purchased the contract of the infielder/outfielder from the Reno Aces, the Dbacks Triple A affiliate, and in order to make room for Evans, the Dbacks optioned Alfredo Marte to Reno. Its a nice story because Evans is a Valley of the Sun native. He was born in Glendale and attended St. Mary’s High School.

Evans was putting up amazing numbers at the time of his callup: In 44 games with the Aces, he was hitting .335 with 11 HR’s, and  he was tied for the Pacific Coast League lead with 44 RBI’s. He also was third in the league with a 1.034 OPS. According to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, Evans can play multiple positions including 1B, 3B, and the outfield.

Marte meanwhile was struggling. He was hitting .200 with no home runs and 7 RBI’s, and was clearly not ready to play consistently in the big leagues. I congratulate Evans. He clearly deserves this promotion and I wish him the best at the big league level.
