The Diamondbacks continued their selling spree Sunday trading starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy to the New York Yankees for rookie starter Vidal Nuno, who has had a rocky rookie season in the Yankees rotation. Most of the experts saw this trade coming for several reasons. The Yankees have been hurt by the injury bug once again especially in the starting rotation. C.C Sabathia is probably going to be out for the rest of the year, Ivan Nova is out for the year after undergoing Tommy John Surgery, and Michael Pineda is on the D.L and they dont know when he was going to come back. Yankees G.M Brian Cashman had to make a move and McCarthy was the best bet. He was valued on the market despite his high era, and his record because of his FIP and his control. With Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel off the market, Brandon McCarthy was the next best option.

For the Diamondbacks, there goal during this deadline season is to shred some salary and trade veteran players. I thought that McCarthy would be the first guy traded out of Arizona, and he ended up being the second. McCarthy just hasn’t been a good fit here in Arizona. This spring McCarthy thought he was throwing better than at any point in his career, but it just hasn’t worked out. He has a 2-10 record and a era over 5. This season with the Dbacks it just seemed like he was either allowing alot of runs, or when he pitched great he wasn’t getting any run support.

I think McCarthy just needs a change of scenery and now he gets the chance to pitch in the American League East with a team that is still in contention for a playoff spot. The Dbacks meanwhile acquired rookie starter Vidal Nuno who has been the Yankees rotation this year as a result of all the injuries to their staff. He is 2-5 with a 5.42 era in 14 starts. He will start for Arizona on Tuesday. I dont know why we needed Nuno, but I know that he is just a short term rental to fill the rotation. I would have preferred to get prospects from the Yanks.

The selling for this team isn’t done, with Martin Prado and Aaron Hill being rumored to go to the Blue Jays.
