Game Recap:

Justin Upton hit an 8th inning solo home run off of reliever Randall Delgado (0-1)  to spoil a solid outing by starting pitcher Chase Anderson (0-0). With the win, the San Diego Padres took the series 2-1.

Starter Brandon Morrow (0-0) pitched seven innings for the Padres, allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking one. The two runs came on a 1st inning Paul Goldschmidt home run, his third of the year.

The Arizona Diamondbacks would rarely threaten to score the rest of the way. The closest they came to scoring came in the third inning when a pair of singles by Goldschmidt and Mark Trumbo gave the team runners on first and third with two outs. Unfortunately, Jake Lamb would fly out on the first pitch he saw and end the threat.

Joaquin Benoit (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless 8th inning, allowing one hit.

Craig Kimbrel struck out two in the 9th to earn his third save of the season.

Thoughts and Observations:

Tough luck for Chase Anderson. He put in his second straight solid start and walks away with another no-decision. Allowing 8 hits in 6 innings is a concern (13 in his last 11 innings), but he keeps finding ways to get out of tough situations. If he can get a little more offensive support, Anderson will have a nice season.

Also of note was the regular season debut of rookie outfielder Yasmany Tomas. Tomas was called up earlier in the day from Arizona’s Triple A affiliate, the Reno Aces. Tomas came in as a pinch hitter for Chase Anderson in the 7th inning. His first major league at-bat ended with a ground out to the second baseman.
