The Arizona Diamondbacks have dropped their third straight Cactus League game to the Seattle Mariners 11-5 at Peoria Stadium. A big 2nd inning against Tommy Henry set the tone for the type of day it would be for Arizona.
Henry's day got off to a good start, as he retired the minimum through the first four hitters. Then the Mariners tallied up four straight hits to take a 3-1 lead and knock out the left-hander from the game. Alec Baker finished the inning, but he allowed three more runs and dug a hole too deep for the Diamondbacks to climb out of.
The big inning came after they got to Emerson Hancock in the top half of the inning. Jake McCarthy doubled to lead of the inning. Ildemaro Vargas cashed in with an RBI single to chase Hancock from the game.
As the Diamondbacks offense sputtered in the middle innings, the Mariners tacked on three more runs to make it 9-1. Scott McGough was touched up for two runs in the third and Dylan Ray surrendered a run in the fifth. Non-roster invitee pitchers Spencer Giesting and Listher Sosa pitched scoreless innings.
The offense came to life in the late innings, scoring two runs each in the eighth and ninth innings. Jack Hurley singled with the bases loaded to drive in two runs and cut the deficit to six. In the ninth, Tim Tawa and Gavin Conticello drove home a run each. Tristin English had a strong day off the bench with a walk and single in his two plate appearances.
The Diamondbacks will host the Cleveland Guardians at Salt River Fields on Monday. Zac Gallen will make his spring debut while Cleveland will start left-hander Joey Cantillo. First pitch is set for 1:10 P.M. MST.
