The Diamondbacks dropped their second straight game against the Rockies 9-3 at Salt River Fields. The game featured some sloppy defense from both teams and poor pitching on Arizona's end.
The Diamondbacks opted to go with a bullpen game, starting non-roster reliever John Curtiss. Curtiss set the side in order in the first as the lone pitching highlight of the day. Jose Castillo came in the second and lasted only five pitches, allowing an infield single and hitting a batter. Castillo got a ground ball to first base, but suffered a groin injury trying to reach back for Jordan Lawlar's errant throw to first. Sam Hilliard, who singled to lead off the inning, scored on the play.
Avery Short inherited a runner and was able to retire the next two hitters to finish the inning, Christian Montes De Oca pitched around a pair of walks to post a scoreless fourth. That would be it, as the Rockies hammered the next three relievers. Zac Veen homered off Billy Corcoran in the fourth to push the lead to 3-0.
The Diamondbacks answered in the fifth. Loading the bases with one out, Ketel Marte drove a ball to the warning track in center field for a sacrifice fly. Aggressive baserunning from Blaze Alexander,, who started the play at second, led to Ezequiel Tovar's errant relay throw and make it a three-run inning. Marte was credited with two RBI on the play.
The good vibes for Arizona ended there, as the Rockies answered with three of their own. Michael Toglia launched a three-run homer to left-center to put Colorado ahead 6-3. The Rockies tacked on three more runs against the Diamondbacks minor league relievers for the final score.
Arizona will be going out west to Peoria to take on Seattle Mariners. Left-hander Tommy Henry will start for the Diamondbacks while right-hander Emerson Hancock will take the mound for Seattle. First pitch at Peoria Stadium will be at 1:10 P.M. MST.
