After not having lost a single game heading into the NLDS, the Arizona Diamondbacks have very quickly found themselves in a 0-2 hole.
Not only that, but the D-Backs are coming off an absolute thrashing in Game 2. There are bad losses and then there’s the 10-0 dud that Arizona laid on Tuesday night in Philly. It was always going to be an uphill battle to beat the Phillies but things got unquestionably harder.
The journey isn’t over, though.
Getting that first win in the series will go a long way in potentially helping the D-Backs get the confidence back that we saw earlier in the postseason. Even in Game 1, the team fought back and was able to close the gap on Philly which created a sense that they might be able to even the series on Tuesday.
That clearly didn’t happen, and the Diamondbacks had the worst possible game it could have had. The silver lining could be the hope that Arizona has hit rock bottom and the only place to go from here is up.
NLCS 2023: How to watch the Arizona Diamondbacks today (October 19th)
Things aren’t going to get much easier in Game 3. Ranger Suarez is on the mound for Philly, who has a 1.04 ERA so far this October. He was lights out against the Braves, shutting down one of the best lineups in baseball while sending them out of the postseason.
That’s what the Diamondbacks are up against. If there’s a way to respond to a 10-0 beating like what Arizona took on Tuesday, it would be to bounce back against one of the Phillies best pitchers right now.
It would be quite the statement, the kind the Diamondbacks absolutely have to make before it’s too late.
