The Diamondbacks Slick Shortstop winds up on the IL
In a move that was heavily predicted, Nick Ahmed has been placed onto the 10-Day IL for the 2nd time this season due to ongoing Right Shoulder issues. At least, that's the assumption. He missed the first couple of weeks of the season after having multiple injections done to his shoulder.
On Wednesday and Friday, Ahmed sat. There were concerns that his shoulder was hurting as Torey had relayed. However, he played on Saturday and Sunday. There was one point late in Sunday's game where Ahmed made a crucial error. He completely overthrew Christian Walker at first base by a wide margin which is completely unlike Nick.
This is just my assumption, but I'm assuming that was when he got hurt again or injured the shoulder worse. Hopefully, it isn't to the point of needing surgery, but just rest. Another reason I see that being the moment the shoulder got bad enough to go to the IL is that Nick was replaced by David Peralta in his next at-bat. This has been a recurring issue for Nick over the past couple of years. That throw was his first error on the year.
When he came back from the IL the first time, it was clear we were seeing a healthy Ahmed on the field once again as he was hitting like he was in early 2019 and 2018 with HRs and making spectacular plays on the field. He has given the team 0.3 Offensive WAR while hitting .231/.259/.442/.702 with a 100 OPS+, 2 doubles, 3 HRs, and 7RBI. Ahmed managed to get in 17 games before the newest issue. Ahmed is signed with the Dbacks through 2023.
Heal up Ahmed, hate not seeing your Gold Glove defense out at shortstop. We'll miss you.
In the meantime, Geraldo Perdomo will be the regular shortstop for the Diamondbacks. The rookie SS is having a decent season so far at the plate. Over his 27 games, he's hitting .221/.369/.279/.648 with a 92 OPS+. That's a below-average offense despite the fact Perdomo is walking a bunch. He's seeing the ball well but struggling to make contact or get the ball into fair territory. He has 14 walks on the season compared to 19 Ks. That's a solid ratio. Perdomo is still seeking his first HR of his MLB career but has hit 2 doubles, 1 triple, and driven in 3 so far. Despite the below-average offense, Perdomo has provided the Diamondbacks with 0.4 WAR.
Replacing Ahmed on the active roster will be Jake Hager (29). He's a middle-infielder that played with the Diamondbacks in 2021 and in Spring Training before being optioned to Triple-AAA Reno at the conclusion of Spring Training. Hager can play multiple infield positions well while providing offense that is similar to Perdomo. He's not a star, but he's a quality backup infielder that will give you decent to quality at-bats when he plays during the week.
At Triple-AAA Reno in 2022, Hager has played in 21 games. With the Aces, he's hit .239/.363/.380/.743 with 15 walks to 20 Ks (like Perdomo) but has an HR and 11 RBI to go with his 7 doubles. It's decent offense for the hitter-friendly ballpark. This will be his second season with the Diamondbacks and his 2nd in the Dbacks organization.
Welcome back to the big leagues Jake!
