This is some good news for Dbacks. Jeremy Hellickson, who at the time of his injury was starting to figure things out, is going to make a rehab start with the Reno Aces. The 28-year old will face off against the El Paso Chihuahuas (yes, that’s a real team) on Sunday night. The Aces are a couple games from finishing off their season, so this was the last opportunity for Hellickson to get some rehab against Triple-A level talent.
Hellickson is 9-8 with a 4.60 ERA and 107 strikeouts this season with the Dbacks. If you take a look around the Arizona rotation, those numbers are pretty much par for the course. The 2011 AL Rookie of the Year has slowly brought his game back up after a terrible 2013. One can only hope that Hellickson will one day return to the 13-10, 2.95 ERA right hander that won over the imagination of Tampa Bay Rays fans.

Hellickson had a rough start to the 2015 season. Once July came around, Hellickson’s ERA was still over 5.00 and his job security was at a very low level. July proved to be Hellickson’s best month. He went 2-1 with a 1.88 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 24 innings. His finest outing of the season came August 11th when he pitched eight scoreless innings in a win over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Hellickson is arbitration eligible this winter and will be a free agent after the 2016 season. However, that doesn’t guarantee a spot in the rotation for him. Archie Bradley, Aaron Blair and Braden Shipley will all contend for a back end rotation spot. If all goes well for Hellickson in his rehab start, he could see a couple of starts in Arizona before the season ends. Hellickson’s start is at 6:05 MST tonight.
In a side note, Archie Bradley will continue his rehab assignment with the Reno Aces tomorrow afternoon in their last game of the season. With the Triple-A ballclub, Bradley has a 2.93 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 15.1 innings. We wish Jeremy Hellickson and Archie Bradley the best in their rehab assignments.
