Following the Eduardo Escobar trade, the Arizona Diamondbacks are calling up Drew Ellis from Triple-AAA Reno Aces.

I covered him in the recent Minor League system update article. He is going to get his shot to be the Diamondbacks 3B of the future right now after hitting .286, .396, .554. He’s hit 13 HRs, 52 RBI’s with 39 walks against 66 strikeouts. He has a good hit tool and can field well for a third baseman.

According to MLB Pipeline, he’s our 29th rated prospect in the system. He’s only 25 and could be controlled until the end of the 2027 season if he stays in the MLB from hereon. He’s had a great year after being selected in the 2nd round of the 2017 MLB rookie draft. We have a top-ten Minor League system in the MLB so don’t let that 29th ranking worry you. He could easily be higher in other Minor League systems.

He should be the first of many of the D-backs prospects to begin making their way into the MLB the rest of this season and next year. Our future is bright with the prospects we have. The season may be lost, but this is an exciting time to be a fan of the D-backs!

Fun fact about Drew, he went to college with Rays top prospect Brendan McKay!
