Projecting the Diamondbacks starting lineup after offseason moves

With the Diamondbacks addressing their lineup this offseason, this is what their starting lineups against right-handers and left-handers should look like.

With the Diamondbacks landing their right-handed bat in Randal Grichuk for the second straight season, most of the lineup configuration is set for the 2025 season. Here's how it projects as a standard lineup, which is always subject to change based on matchups and who is available.

As seen here, the Diamondbacks can naturally structure their lineup more against righties in a left-right configuration while also being able to load it up against lefties. Typically the split between the handedness is roughly a 70/30 split for right-handers, and possibly as a low as 2:1.

The lineups are based off what they were in 2024. Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte alternated the leadoff spot between righties and lefties, to try to create instant offense from the very first batter of the game. Marte is no stranger to that, a career .307 hitter from the leadoff spot and 10 career leadoff home runs. Carroll is a .257 hitter with a .804 OPS and four career leadoff home runs but also brings the speed element into the game with a .341 on-base percentage.

Grichuk serves as the main lineup change right vs. left. He would sub in for Pavin Smith in pinch-hit opportunities. Despite the lineup being stacked against left-handers, they have the option to make a counter move by pinch-hitting Smith against a righty to break up the flow of right-handed bats late in games.

Arizona lost a lot of power in their lineup with Christian Walker and Joc Pederson leaving in free agency. They acquired Josh Naylor to try to fill the hole at both first base and the cleanup spot. He's coming off a 31 home run season, so the Diamondbacks will be looking for a repeat performance. The top half of the lineup is going to have to do a lot of the heavy lifting from an extra-base hit standpoint.

The bottom of the lineup can be dangerous, with on-base threats such as Jake McCarthy and Geraldo Perdomo. Arizona's lineup is most dangerous when those two get on and create havoc as it turns over to their big bats. It's a formula that has worked since the 2023 postseason.
