Saunders Treated to Another Diamondbacks Special

AUTHOR: Scott Allen | IN: Diamondbacks | COMMENTS: None Yet

Newly acquired pitcher Joe Saunders got to take the mound on Thursday night in Philadelphia.  His first start ended just like the previous six games had for the Arizona Diamondbacks – a loss.  He received the same special the Dbacks consistently served up for the departed Dan Haren – no or little run support.  Once again the Dbacks left their bats at the hotel.

This evening it was lost in extra innings.  The Phillies won 3-2.  At least the Dbacks fought tonight and didn;t give up, but clearly this is a team destined for 100 losses or more.  They can’t buy a break.  After Gerrardo Parra ruined a ninth-inning rally with a double play, he threw his helmet down in disgust at himself.  First base umpire Adrian Johnson immediately threw him out of the game, thinking he was mad at the call and directing his disgust at him.  Clearly he wasn’t upset with the call, just himself, but Johnson felt otherwise and tossed him.  That’s just the way things have gone for the hapless Dbacks this season.

The Dbacks have now lost seven in a row and head to New York to play the Mets.  The Dbacks swept the Mets last week and you can be sure they haven’t forgotten and will be looking for some home revenge.  On to number eight!

Post-Haren Era Starts Off With Loss

AUTHOR: Scott Allen | IN: 2010 Gameday | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

What else is new?  Another day, another loss.

The post-Dan Haren era started Tuesday night against the Philadelphia Phillies with a 9-5 loss.  The Arizona Diamondbacks bullpen had another “tremendous” effort.  Starter Rodrigo Lopez left the game leading 5-4.  Blaine Boyer seemingly had things in hand in the sixth inning until manager Kirk Gibson replaced him with Jordan Norberto.  Norberto subsequently came in and gave away the farm.  Surprised?  I’m not.

You know what I was surprised about?  Our new interim general manager Jerry Dipoto.  During tonight’s telecast on Fox Sports Arizona he was interviewed up in the booth.  During that interview, Dipoto was asked by Darren Sutton if he had met newly acquired starting pitcher Joe Saunders yet, whom the camera caught in the dugout as Dipoto was asked the question.  he said he hadn’t had the chance to meet him yet.  Really?  Instead of doing your spin tour Jerry, how about going and meeting the player you traded for only 48 hours earlier!  Clearly, it appears to be chaos in the front office.   No one knows what they are doing when it comes to baseball decisions.

I’m afraid for what lies ahead for the rest of the week.  Which players survive and who leaves Phoenix?

Haren Trade Raises Questions

AUTHOR: Scott Allen | IN: 2010 Gameday | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

When it was announced that Dan Haren was traded to the Los Angeles Angels this afternoon for Joe Saunders, Patrick Corbin, and Rafael Rodriguez, I knew only one thing – this was a pure salary dump.  This was a financial move no matter how you spin it.  Ok, sure, the Dbacks will tell you they got a lefty in Saunders and that there is a top prospect to be named later and a guy in Rodriguez that can help you in relief now.  That’s what they will tell you publicly.  Privately they will tell you something completely different.

The Dbacks dump a lot of salary to save themselves some, hopefully for next season.  Will they spend it though?  If they don’t, they will run the risk of alienating even more fans than they did with today’s trade.  I could literally hear the air come out of the baseball tires in this city.  I don’t know what else to expect the rest of this week before next Sunday’s trade deadline, I honestly don’t?  I still thought there was a chance up until this afternoon that Haren would stay here.  That’s just me being naive though.  I wish they would address the dead weight on this team.  I mean the physical kind too, not the financial kind.  Dumping salary won’t put more rear ends in those seats, I guarantee that.

Did the Dbacks make a good move in trading Dan Haren to LA on Sunday?

BREAKING: Dan Haren Traded to LA Angels

AUTHOR: Scott Allen | IN: Uncategorized | COMMENTS: None Yet

Arizona Diamondbacks

The inevitable has occurred. Dan Haren has been traded. He is now a member of the Los Angeles Angels. One of the players the Arizona Diamondbacks will receive in return is Joe Saunders.

It could have been worse, but I don't know if there is anything better than just hanging on to Haren.  I'm a little more than disappointed the Dbacks didn't hang onto him.  Clearly Haren was not the reason why this team has tanked, although he is not have a Dan Haren-like season.  This move had to be financially motivated.  Granted, the Dbacks are getting players in return who can help now, but I still don't like it.

More to come as the picture of this trade becomes clearer.

Andre Dawson Part of Hall of Fame Induction Today

Andre Dawson, manager Whitey Herzog, and umpire Doug Harvey are all poised to enter the National Baseball Hall of Fame today. Congratulations to all.

Dawson, "the Hawk", who played for the Montreal Expos, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, and Florida Marlins, will always be remembered by myself for his time in the north side of Chicago. As a Cubs fan growing up, I loved watching Dawson come up to the plate with literally a chance to hit one out of the park every time he came to the plate. He was a member of the Cubs from 1987-1992. His best season in Chicago was his first in '87. He hit 49 home runs that season en route to an MVP award.

The MVP award was slightly controversial because he played on a last place team. The thought was, if he was so valuable, then how come the team finished last? You couldn't ignore the numbers though. In addition to the home runs, he had 137 RBI. He batted .287, which for a power hitter with those types of numbers, was fantastic. I was all for the award, not because he was a Chicago Cub, however because he deserved it, on a losing team or not.

Ironically, his worst season as a Cub came in 1989 when they won the NL East. He still hit .252 and 21 home runs that season. Of course many will remember him from his days as an Expo and rightfully so, but what I would give to see Dawson in a Cubs uniform one more time and hit one out to Waveland Avenue.

Qualls Biding His Time

Just waiting.

Sitting here waiting for the Arizona Diamondbacks to finally realize what a waste of space Chad Qualls has become.    He gave up another three runs on Saturday night in the 10-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants.  He recorded two whopping outs.  He got lucky.

You can't trade him and you can't send him to the minors.  Leaving him on the bench and not playing him uses up a roster spot.  Something must be finally done about him.  How many times do you throw him out there to "work through things"?  It's getting tiresome for many.  If it is for the Dbacks, they sure aren't acting like it.  Maybe it is about time.

I understand Qualls wants to do better, be better.  He isn't getting any better though.  It's time to dump him and bring in a younger arm.  Give someone from the minors a chance.  Doesn't matter who.  Fact is, Qualls is done, at least here.  I can't imagine him helping anyone else out right now either.  Best thing for him may be to get away from the game, at least for this season, start anew somewhere else next season.  All I know is, it ain't working here.

For all of us Dbacks management, do the right thing.  Please.

Dan Haren Still A Diamondback, For Now

AUTHOR: Scott Allen | IN: Diamondbacks | COMMENTS: None Yet

I woke up this morning not sure if Dan Haren would still be an Arizona Diamondback.  Apparently he is.  As of last night, the New York Yankees were front-runners to acquire the Dbacks ace, however, they fell out of the front-runner position after turning Arizona down on an offer that included Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain.

A bunch of teams still figure to be in the mix.  One team I would not count on is the Detroit Tigers.  Dan Haren has the ability to veto any trade to Detroit.  My guess is he would and so the Dbacks may not go that route for any proposals.  I would not count out the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, or a surprise team.  Fact is, the Diamondbacks are looking for the best offer they can get in return, no matter the team.

So, what do you think?  Will he make it through the day still a Dback?  Rumor is the Dbacks want to unload him before his next scheduled start on Monday.  We’ll see.  Could be an interesting weekend.  The Dbacks may not stop after one deal depending on who and what they get in return.

Where will Dan Haren be when he wakes up Monday morning?

Rumors Running Wild on Haren; Yankees Front-Runners

AUTHOR: Scott Allen | IN: Breaking News | COMMENTS: None Yet

As much as I thought several days ago that Dan Haren was definitely staying in Arizona, now it appears he has one foot out the door with the other only needing a slight push.

Rumors have the New York Yankees dealing for the right-handed Arizona Diamondbacks ace. The Yankees failed to get Cliff Lee earlier this month, now they’re apparently glued with both eyes on Haren. Other teams appears to be front-runners earlier this week and last such as the St. Louis Cardinals and Detroit Tigers, however the Tigers are one of Haren’s no-trade clause teams.

I have to be honest, I’m a little surprised there are a number of teams interested in Haren, at least right now, given the way he’s performed this season to date. Haren isn’t exactly blowing people away. it is what it is and I’m disappointed the Dbacks are willing to part with Haren. Haren can still help be part of this team’s re-building future.

Stay tuned. This story seems to be changing by the hour.

The Real Edwin Jackson

AUTHOR: Scott Allen | IN: Diamondbacks | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

June 20, 2010: Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Edwin Jackson (36) during the MLB baseball game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan.

Yesterday I had the chance to meet Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Edwin Jackson in a meet and greet prior to the Dbacks 14-inning win and series sweep over the New York Mets 4-3.  I had the chance to ask him a couple of questions in our limited time with him.  He spent a good portion of the session talking about what everyone wants to talk about with him these days, his no-hitter against the Tampa Bay Rays on June 25th.

I asked him at what point during the game did he know the no-hitter was a possibility.

"(not until) the ninth inning"

Very down to Earth Jackson is.  He came from Georgia.  He said both his parents were at his no-hitter.  He mentioned that the whole thing for a couple of days was quite surreal to him.  It really didn't hit him for a day or two on what had really taken place.

The topic of him converting from an outfielder to a pitcher when he started pro ball came up.  Someone asked him about his opportunity to hit in the National League and if he was jealous of Dan Haren's good year at the plate, more pointing to competition amongst the pitchers.  He said it is fun to have the competition and he agreed he thought, like most of us, Haren's bases loaded long fly ball a couple of weeks ago was destined to be a home run. I reminded him that he too hit a home run earlier in the season against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"I got lucky.  I closed my eyes."

Lucky or not, Jackson is happy where he is and it shows.

All is Enright With the Dbacks

AUTHOR: Scott Allen | IN: 2010 Gameday | COMMENTS: None Yet

Barry Enright.  Before June, never heard of the guy.  Arizona Diamondbacks fans should be familiar with him now after a gem on Tuesday night to defeat the New York Mets 3-2.

Enright pitched eight innings and struck out eight, giving up just one run on five hits.  Juan "Long Gone" Gutierrez sure made it interesting in the ninth.  I purposely turned it off because I knew he would make it interesting.  He gave up a home run in the first save situation for the Dbacks in the Kirk Gibson era.  However, he prevailed in "nailing" down the save.

What is also amazing, this is the first win streak the Dbacks have had in the Gibson era.  He's been manager for almost three weeks now.  How sad.  Then again, the Dbacks have done everything but keep their fans happy in this miserable season so far.

After last night's 13-2 rout, the Dbacks won this one with pitching and some timely hitting.  Enright even helped his own cause with an RBI single.  I can't believe I'm saying this, but the Dbacks go for the sweep tomorrow.  I wouldn't count on it, but you never know.
