The Dbacks have placed Tuffy Gosewisch on the 15-Day DL with a knee injury and have called up Jarrod Saltalamacchia from AAA Reno. This injury to the incumbent starter only makes things more complex. The decision to call up Salty instead of Peter O’Brien also speaks volumes. One things more certain. The competition is on.

So far in 2015, Tuffy is hitting .211 with a home run and 13 RBI. He’s more valued for his defensive abilities. The backup, Jordan Pacheco, is a converted 1st baseman but his offense hasn’t been much of a step above. Pacheco is hitting .208 with two homers and 8 RBI. Neither options at catcher have been consistent or overly productive.

The same can be said about Salty in 2015. Before he was cut by Miami, he had hit 2-for-29 (.069) with a home run with the Marlins. After he was signed by Arizona, he was sent to Reno for some tuning up. Salty has gone 6-for-32 (.188) with a couple of long balls in AAA ball. It’s not as if he’s back to his Red Sox days.

Meanwhile, Dbacks prospect Peter O’Brien is hitting .345 with 11 home runs and 45 RBI with Reno. O’Brien recently returned to the back stop to work on his defensive abilities. The fact that the Dbacks decided to call up Salty over O’Brien means that they still don’t believe the 24-year old is capable defensively.
