Arizona Diamondbacks Daily Dose: Free Agent Frenzy

facebooktwitterreddit

Buckle up everybody! As of midnight Friday the free agent frenzy has officially begun and what is known as the “quiet period” has ended.

Free agents are now eligible to sign a contract with any team instead of being limited to their previous organization, and teams can negotiate freely with any free agent.

The rumors have already begun, but they are just getting started. Its going to be curious where David Price, Jason Heyward, Zack Greinke and others nationally end up.

I will be paying most attention to what kind of splash the Arizona Diamondbacks will make. It’s not if and when Dave Stewart and company will make a splash, it’s how significant that splash will be.

More from Diamondbacks News

The D-backs are on the brink of competing in the National League West, and really all this team is missing is reliable and consistent starting pitching at the top of the rotation to lead a young staff.

Payroll wise, the Snakes haven’t been in better shape in quite a long time. The D-backs have just a little over $32 million in guaranteed contracts for the 2016 season and one of those guys (Aaron Hill) is likely to get traded this winter.

If the D-backs were to tender all of their arbitration eligible free agents then they would only have between $57-58 million in committed salary. This leaves the team between $30-$40 million to spend on starting pitching, catcher, and bullpen depth.

Expect the D-backs to be linked to many free agent starting pitchers including Johnny Cueto, Mike Leake, and Scott Kazmir, and for the Snakes to sign at least two free agent starters.

Keep in mind: this team ranked in the top 10 in baseball in both runs scored, and defense yet they were also in the bottom third with a starters ERA over four. If they can add starters, many in the national media see this team as a sleeper for the postseason.

Following the free agency market is always fun, but when you know your team is expected to be active it makes it all the more exciting.
